Air Fryer Crispy Onions

  • Author: Sophia

Description

These air fryer crispy onions are the perfect topping for burgers, casseroles, green bean dishes, or even enjoyed as a crunchy snack. Light, golden, and crisp without deep frying, they offer all the flavor and texture of traditional fried onions but with far less oil. Quick to prepare and incredibly versatile, they’ll become a go-to addition in your kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale

1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
½ cup buttermilk
½ cup all-purpose flour
¼ cup cornstarch
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon paprika
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
Oil spray for air frying

Instructions

Place the thinly sliced onions in a bowl and cover with buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 15 minutes to tenderize and add flavor.

In another bowl, mix the flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.

Remove the onions from the buttermilk and let the excess liquid drip off. Toss them in the flour mixture until evenly coated.

Preheat the air fryer to 350°F. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with oil.

Add a layer of coated onions to the basket without overcrowding. Lightly spray the tops with oil to help them crisp.

Air fry for 8 to 10 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until the onions are golden brown and crispy. Repeat in batches if needed.

Let them cool slightly before serving to allow maximum crispiness.

Notes

Soaking the onions in buttermilk not only enhances flavor but also helps the coating stick. Cornstarch in the flour mix adds extra crunch. For best results, slice the onions thinly and evenly. These are best eaten fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to one day. Re-crisp in the air fryer for a few minutes if needed.
