Ingredients
- 1 lb elbow macaroni, uncooked
- 6 slices bacon, chopped
- 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey for a leaner option)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional, for topping)
- Chopped green onions, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
1️⃣ Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
2️⃣ Cook the Pasta: In a large pot, cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
3️⃣ Cook the Bacon: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped bacon until crispy. Transfer the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate to drain, leaving about 1 tablespoon of bacon grease in the skillet.
4️⃣ Cook the Beef: In the same skillet, add the ground beef (or turkey) and cook until browned. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking for 3-4 minutes until the onion is translucent. Drain any excess grease if needed.
5️⃣ Prepare the Cheese Sauce: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked macaroni, crispy bacon, beef mixture, milk, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and half of the cheddar and mozzarella cheeses. Mix everything well and season with salt and black pepper.
6️⃣ Transfer to Baking Dish: Pour the mac and cheese mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar and mozzarella cheeses evenly on top.
7️⃣ Add Breadcrumbs (Optional): If you’d like a crispy topping, combine the breadcrumbs with olive oil, then sprinkle them over the cheese layer.
8️⃣ Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
9️⃣ Serve: Remove from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped green onions if desired.
Notes
- Ground Meat: Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
- Cheese Variations: Mix it up with sharp cheddar, Monterey Jack, or Colby for added flavor.
- Bacon Option: Use turkey bacon if you prefer a leaner dish.
