Ingredients
Scale
- 6 slices bologna
- 4 slices bread
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- 2 thick slices tomato
- 2 slices cheddar cheese
- Cooking spray
Instructions
-
Prepare the Bread:
-
Spread 1 tbsp of mayonnaise on one side of each of the two slices of bread. Add a thick slice of tomato and a slice of cheddar cheese on top of the mayonnaise.
-
Fry the Bologna:
-
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat, spraying it with cooking spray. Cut an “X” into the center of each bologna slice to prevent curling, then fry each slice for 3-4 minutes per side until caramelized.
-
Assemble the Sandwich:
-
Place three slices of fried bologna on each prepared bread slice with tomato and cheese.
-
Toast the Sandwich:
-
Top the sandwiches with the remaining bread slices. Toast each side in the skillet until golden brown, or use a sandwich press.
-
Serve:
-
Remove from the skillet, cut in half if desired, and serve hot.
Notes
- Bologna Curling: To prevent bologna from curling during frying, always make small cuts along the edge. This helps the meat cook evenly and stay flat.
- Bread Options: While white bread is the traditional choice, you can experiment with sandwich rolls, sourdough, or whole wheat bread for different flavors and textures.
- Variations: For added richness, top the bologna with a fried egg or cheese, or try regional twists like adding barbecue sauce or caramelized onions.
- Healthier Options: Use turkey bologna and whole wheat bread to lighten up the sandwich without sacrificing flavor.
