Description

The Million Dollar Ravioli Casserole is a rich and decadent baked pasta dish that combines layers of tender ravioli, a creamy blend of cheeses, and marinara sauce, all baked together to create a golden, bubbly masterpiece. This casserole is a crowd-pleaser, perfect for family dinners, potlucks, or a comforting meal on busy nights. The name “Million Dollar” comes from the luxurious texture and taste of the creamy cheese mixture, which elevates this simple dish into something truly special. Easy to make and highly customizable, it’s a great recipe that anyone can prepare and enjoy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (25 ounces) frozen cheese ravioli
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce
  • 1 cup cottage cheese
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  • Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
  • Stir in marinara sauce, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, sour cream, and 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese.
  • Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Arrange half of the frozen ravioli in a single layer over the sauce.
  • Spread the cheese mixture evenly over the ravioli.
  • Add the remaining ravioli in a single layer.
  • Top with the remaining meat sauce.
  • Sprinkle with the remaining 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan cheese.
  • Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

  • Ravioli:
    • You can use frozen or fresh ravioli. Cheese ravioli is classic, but you can switch it up with meat or vegetable fillings like spinach or mushroom. If using frozen ravioli, be sure to cook them first.
  • Cheese Blend:
    • The combination of ricotta, cream cheese, mozzarella, and Parmesan gives this casserole its signature creamy, “million-dollar” richness. Using freshly shredded mozzarella and Parmesan will enhance the texture and flavor, as pre-shredded cheeses often contain additives that affect melting.
  • Marinara Sauce:
    • Homemade marinara will add a personal touch, but store-bought works just as well. The key is using a flavorful sauce that complements the rich cheese layers without overpowering them.
  • Layering:
    • Be careful not to use too much sauce between the layers; just a light coating will prevent the casserole from becoming watery. If you prefer extra saucy dishes, add a bit more to the top.
  • Customization:
    • This recipe is very versatile. You can add cooked ground beef, sausage, or bacon for a heartier version. For a vegetarian option, use veggie-filled ravioli or add layers of sautéed vegetables like zucchini, mushrooms, or spinach.
  • Make-Ahead and Storage:
    • This casserole can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated for up to 24 hours or frozen for up to 3 months. If freezing, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight before baking. Leftovers keep well in the fridge for 3-4 days.
  • Baking Tips:
    • Covering the casserole with foil during the first half of baking prevents the cheese from browning too quickly. Removing the foil during the last 10-15 minutes allows the cheese on top to turn a nice golden color.
