Description
Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes combine the rich, savory flavors of a classic cheesesteak with the comfort and simplicity of a sloppy joe. Ground beef is cooked with onions and peppers, then smothered in a creamy cheese sauce and piled high on toasted buns. It’s an easy weeknight meal that satisfies any cheesesteak craving without the fuss of slicing steak.
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
3/4 cup beef broth
1 cup shredded provolone or mozzarella cheese
4 hamburger buns
Butter for toasting buns (optional)
Instructions
1️⃣ In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and bell pepper and sauté until softened, about 4-5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds.
2️⃣ Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until fully browned. Drain excess fat if necessary.
3️⃣ Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and flour. Mix well to coat the meat evenly and cook for 1 minute.
4️⃣ Pour in the beef broth and bring to a simmer. Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens.
5️⃣ Reduce heat to low and stir in the shredded cheese. Mix until the cheese is melted and the mixture is creamy and well combined.
6️⃣ While the meat is simmering, toast the hamburger buns in a separate skillet with a little butter if desired.
7️⃣ Spoon the cheesy beef mixture onto the toasted buns and serve hot.
Notes
Provolone gives that classic Philly flavor, but mozzarella or even white American cheese works well too. For extra richness, try adding a splash of heavy cream with the cheese. This recipe is perfect for a crowd and can easily be doubled. Serve with fries or a side salad for a complete meal.
