Description
Kool-Aid Taffy is a fun and vibrant homemade treat that combines the delicious fruity flavor of Kool-Aid with the classic chewy texture of taffy. This candy is simple to make and offers endless flavor possibilities, thanks to the wide variety of Kool-Aid packets available. Perfect for parties, homemade gift-giving, or just a sweet treat to satisfy your candy cravings.
Ingredients
1 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
½ cup water
1 (0.15 oz) packet unsweetened Kool-Aid powder (any flavor)
½ teaspoon baking soda
Optional: Food coloring (to enhance the color of your chosen Kool-Aid flavor)
Instructions
Prepare Your Workspace:
Lightly grease a baking sheet or a large plate with cooking spray or butter. This will help prevent the taffy from sticking as it cools.
Cook the Sugar Mixture:
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves completely. Once dissolved, stop stirring and let the mixture come to a boil. Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature—cook until it reaches 250°F–260°F (soft-ball stage).
Add Flavor and Color:
Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the Kool-Aid powder and baking soda. The mixture will bubble up slightly due to the baking soda, which is completely normal. If you’d like a more vibrant color, add a drop or two of food coloring to match the flavor you’ve chosen.
Cool and Stretch:
Pour the hot mixture onto the prepared baking sheet or plate. Allow it to cool just enough so you can handle it safely (about 5–10 minutes). Grease your hands with butter or cooking spray, then begin pulling and stretching the taffy until it becomes light, airy, and slightly firmer. This process may take 10–15 minutes but is crucial for achieving that perfect chewy texture.
Shape and Cut:
Once stretched, roll the taffy into a long rope and cut it into bite-sized pieces using scissors or a sharp knife. Wrap each piece individually in wax paper or plastic wrap to keep them fresh and easy to enjoy.
Store and Enjoy:
Store the wrapped taffy in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. These chewy, fruity treats are perfect for sharing or enjoying as a fun homemade candy whenever you want a burst of sweetness!
Notes
-
Be careful when working with hot sugar syrup, as it can cause burns. Make sure to let it cool enough so that it’s safe to handle.
-
The longer you stretch the taffy, the lighter and chewier it will be. If you’re short on time, you can skip some of the stretching, but it won’t be as airy.
-
Experiment with different Kool-Aid flavors to create a variety of colorful taffy! You can also mix flavors to create unique combinations.
