This layered treat starts with a salty pretzel crust, followed by a rich, tangy cream cheese layer, and topped with a sweet strawberry Jell-O layer filled with fresh strawberries. It’s a crowd-pleaser, often served at potlucks, barbecues, holidays, and family gatherings, and it brings together contrasting flavors and textures in the best way possible.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 oz Strawberry Jello
- 2 cups Boiling water
- 2 cups Pretzels, crushed
- 1/4 cup Sugar
- 8 tablespoon Unsalted Butter
- 8 oz Cream Cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup Sugar
- 8 oz Whipped Topping, thawed
- 1 lb Strawberries, sliced
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Mix the Strawberry Jello with boiling water in a medium bowl. Stir until completely dissolved and allow it to cool to room temperature.
Melt butter in a medium saucepan and stir in 1/4 cup sugar. Add the crushed pretzels to this mixture.
Transfer the pretzel mixture to a 9×13 baking pan, pressing evenly into the bottom to form a crust. Bake for about 10 minutes, then allow to cool completely.
While the pretzel layer cools, use a hand mixer to blend the cream cheese with 1/2 cup sugar until smooth. Gently fold in the whipped topping.
Spread the cream cheese mixture over the cooled pretzel layer, ensuring you cover the entire surface to seal the layers.
Chill the pan in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
Stir the sliced strawberries into the room temperature jello, then pour over the cream cheese layer. Refrigerate for 2-3 hours, or until the jello is set.
Serve this delightful dessert chilled and enjoy the perfect balance of sweet, salty, and creamy flavors.
Notes
- Ensure the Pretzel Crust Stays Crunchy: After baking the pretzel crust, allow it to cool completely before adding the cream cheese layer. Spreading the cream cheese layer all the way to the edges helps create a barrier to prevent the Jell-O from seeping into the crust and making it soggy.
- Use Fresh or Frozen Strawberries: Fresh strawberries are preferred for their texture, but frozen strawberries can be used if fresh ones are not available. Just make sure to thaw and drain them well before adding them to the Jell-O mixture to avoid excess moisture.
- Chill the Dessert Properly: This dessert requires adequate chilling time for the Jell-O to set properly and for the layers to firm up. Refrigerate the assembled salad for at least 4 hours or overnight for best results.
- Customize the Recipe: Feel free to substitute other fruits and Jell-O flavors to suit your preferences. Raspberries with raspberry Jell-O or peaches with peach Jell-O make great alternatives. You can also add a layer of whipped cream for extra creaminess or garnish with mint leaves for added freshness.
- Don’t Make it Too Far in Advance: While this dessert can be made ahead of time, it’s best enjoyed within a day or two of assembly to ensure the pretzel crust retains its crunch.
